Lynn West is pregnant, but her sister-in-law Yvonne Dunn resents her for no longer running the flea market stall. Theresa Dunn, a reincarnated Daoist mystic, awakens inside Lynn's womb and realizes she's trapped in a trashy romance novel's plot. Meanwhile, Lynn's husband Zachary Dunn is cheating with Cindy Tang out of town and couldn't care less about the pregnancy. When livestock start dying mysteriously, Yvonne blames Lynn. During the town's Harvest Festival, Yvonne vandalizes the corn dolly altar—making Lynn's pious mother-in-law Ingrid Dunn declare the unborn baby "devil-spawn." They sabotage Lynn at every turn: pouring her imported formula down the drain, using baby clothes as rags, and forcing her to eat garbage while pampering Yvonne. After a near-hit by a pickup truck, local entrepreneur Luke Reed helps Lynn up—only for Yvonne to spread rumors they're having an affair. Soon the whole town turns on Lynn, with church ladies demanding she be run out of town. At the climax, the mob attacks Lynn in the old barn... until Theresa's powers manifest. A divine lightning bolt strikes Yvonne and Ingrid mid-sermon, leaving them twitching in the mud.
